How to make weak nails stronger

The recent months of icy cold weather have played havoc with my nails causing them to split, break and in not so many words look horrendous and unkept. So I went on a search for solutions and came across some interesting gadgets including a curved nail file. It is a wonder nobody thought about it before, as nails are naturally curved and not straight. I have tested it and it seems pretty effective and the little emergency file is cute.

If I can be disciplined enough to use the above products regularly I will report back on progress and hopefully the weather will get a bit warmer.

Do any of you have any tips for keeping your nails in good order, if so do share.

PS. I have been using MitoQ Anti-Age skincare (I wrote about it here) for about four weeks and my skin is in very good condition despite the fact that I use prescription Ritinol serum, which can cause my skin to get very dry. I find that MitoQ is a joy to use. It is a very light cream that glides onto the skin leaving no greasy residue. My skin is looking smoother and firmer and feels very soft to the touch. I will report further when I go back to the skin clinic and have my skin tested on the all revealing computer screen.

I would love to hear from any of my readers who joined in the MitoQ trial. Do leave a comment on my blog, email me at chicatanyage(at)btinternet.com or comment on the MitoQ facebook page

Thank you for reading. I really love to hear from you and appreciate the time you take to leave comments.

Have you ever had a professional gel or shellac manicure? The product is applied and dried under a special light. Polish is dry immediately and maintains its shine for 2 weeks. Makes nails very strong. I love it.

Hi Marguerite. Yes I have and my nails looked great for 2 weeks but it is quite high maintenance to keep up and when I stopped my nails seemed to be even more fragile.

I have heard that ultimately the shellac will hurt your nails..one reason I stopped. I know a woman who soaks her nails every evening in a little bowl of olive oil. She insists it helps the nails and cuticles.

Thanks Pam for reminding me I used to do that as a teenager. Oil slightly warmed but not too hot.

I see a lot of progress when I remember to wear gloves when washing dishes. Also, if I just keep a coat or two of natural coloured polish (I happen to like Rimmel) on, it seems to help. Look forward to hearing about any other ideas, though.

I have had a lot of luck with the cuticle oil type products. My nails dry out and the extra moisture helps to keep them not so brittle.

Enjoyed your post and the comments as that is a problem I have as well. I have always dreamed of having great looking nails, but so far it is still only a dream.

I second Shelly's comment. I always wear rubber gloves - can't put my hands in water without gloves.
